VERNE GOODWIN MIRA MESA SENIOR CENTER
Located at 8460 Mira Mesa Blvd, the Mira Mesa Senior Center offers a variety of classes and activities for Mira Mesa residents over 50 years of age.
It is home to:
The Golden Friends
and
The Filipino-American Senior Citizen Association (FASCA).
The Senior Center started with a survey of Mira Mesa which resulted in the formation of the Mira Mesa Golden Friends Club in 1977. One of the Golden Friends’ first projects was the creation of a Senior Center in Mira Mesa. In 1979, by resolution, the City of San Diego set aside a parcel of land in the community park for the Golden Friends and North County Filipino–American Services (FIL-AM) to build a Senior Citizens Recreation Building. FASCA is the successor organization to FIL-AM.
The city provided no funding and the seniors had to raise all funds for the building. On November 22, 1986 the dedication ceremony of the Mira Mesa Senior Center building was held. The dream of a dedicated, hard-working group of seniors had finally been realized. The senior citizens in our community now have a place to meet. The Senior Center’s facilities are also available for non-senior meetings, events or private parties.
The Board of Governors (BOG) of the Mira Mesa Seniors Center Organization was established and empowered to direct all activities for the benefit of all seniors. The BOG is comprised of six members, three each, from the Golden Friends and FASCA. Mrs. Lolita Supnet is the current Chairman of the BOG. The Senior Center is the only one in San Diego County that is run entirely by volunteers.
The BOG sponsors free programs for Seniors: a Monthly Dance and Social from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on the third Sunday; Exercise Classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Painting Class on Thursday mornings are co-sponsored with the Community College Continuing Education Program; Yoga Classes are held on Fridays at 1:00pm; Line Dancing is held from 7:30pm to 9:30pm on Friday evenings. Bingo is offered on Friday mornings.
The BOG rents the Senior Center rooms for various social events and parties to help defray the cost of maintaining the Senior Center.
The Mira Mesa Golden Friends has weekly meetings that are held every Tuesday morning at 10:00am. The first meeting of the month is the regular business meting. All other Tuesdays are predominantly social meetings. Meetings include live entertainment, speakers and videos. Special events during the year include a Spring and a Fall Social, summer picnics, a card party, Thanksgiving Dinner, and Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.
Game Day is held at 1:00pm on Tuesdays.
Game Night is held on Wednesday evening at 7:00pm.
The Golden Friends have a membership of approximately 175 seniors. Mr Charles Sweet is President of the
Golden Friends.
The FASCA Board of Directors meets on the first Saturday of every month at 9:00am. A general membership and social is held on the second Saturday of every month from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Other events may be scheduled during the year. Mrs. Lolita Supnet is the current FASCA President.
Membership in both the Golden Friends and FASCA is open to seniors over fifty years of age. Dues are $10.00 per year.
The Samahan Nutrition Program provides meals for seniors each non-holiday weekday at the Senior Center. Donations requested for the meals at the Senior Center are $3.00, over 60; and $4.00 if under 60. They also provide home delivery of meals to home-bound seniors and a caregiver for $3.00 each. This program is a contract of the San Diego County Aging and Independent Services. Mrs. Gloria Supnet manages the Nutrition Program.
